Social Life

The Intensive English Program Summer Scholars Program provides a variety of evening and weekend activities.

Social Life

Students stay in double occupancy rooms with another SSP student of the same gender in one of the University of Miami’s dormitories, known locally as residential colleges. Accommodations are air-conditioned and include internet connections, desks, beds and bureaus for two students. Study lounges, laundry facilities, and vending areas are located inside the residential college. Students have easy access to the University’s outstanding sports and recreational facilities. Community assistants also live in the dormitories and are available to assist students with questions, problems, or in case of an emergency. Community Assistants also plan evening activities in the dorms on weeknights, such as s'mores, ice cream socials, karaoke, study groups, etc. Students must be on their floors by 10:00pm, and in their rooms by midnight each night.

The program fee includes breakfast, lunch and dinner daily, usually in a UM dining hall. Meals may occasionally be offered in other locations during field trips or on holidays.

Weekend activities offered during IEP SSP may include: snorkeling in Key Largo, touring the Everglades, attending a Marlins game, touring Miami Beach, going on shopping outings, and earning community service hours. All activities are chaperoned by program staff. Students may also have the opportunity to participate in a dolphin encounter and/or shark tagging experience (additional fee applies).

Getting to UM: Airport transportation is available for students flying to and from Miami International Airport (MIA). Housing opens on Saturday, July 1 and closes on Friday, July 21. Please note that students are NOT permitted to bring a car to campus.
