Intensive English Program

The University of Miami Intensive English Program (IEP) has more than 65 years of experience offering quality English-language instruction for academic purposes. The program's mission is to help prepare international students to transition to a university in the United States. International students who completed the University of Miami program had consistently higher graduation rates than those who did not.

Accredited by the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation (CEA) and a member of the University and College Intensive English Programs (UCIEP), the University of Miami IEP has helped students from more than 100 different countries adapt to university life and American culture through a wealth of activities both inside and outside the classroom. The program facilitates intercultural understanding, offers support and guidance related to nonacademic issues, and builds ease and confidence in a new culture.

Frequently Asked Questions

You will take a placement exam during the IEP registration and orientation. The exam has a listening section, a reading section, a writing section, and an interview with an IEP faculty member.

We recommend that a student be at least 18 years of age.

If you are currently studying at another school in the United States, you can request a transfer to the IEP at the University of Miami.

You will need to submit the following:

✓ Application to the Intensive English Program, including your permanent foreign address and your local U.S. address
✓ Bank letter or scholarship letter
✓ Nonrefundable and nontransferable application fee of $125
✓ Photocopy of the passport identification page
✓ Photocopy of the F-1 visa stamp in passport
✓ Photocopy of your current Form I-20
✓ Print-out of your I-94
✓ Photocopy of your current Form I-20
✓ Print-out of your University of Miami Intensive English Program Transfer Eligibility Form

Successful completion of level five in the Intensive English Program fulfills the English requirement for undergraduate admission to the University of Miami. Admission to the University of Miami is selective and completed through the International Admission Department. We actively seek students who demonstrate academic strength, personal integrity, and seriousness of educational purpose.

Yes, the University of Miami does offer conditional admission to academically qualified undergraduate applicants. Academically qualified applicants who are unable to take the TOEFL, or who have scored less than the required minimum, may be offered admission to undergraduate programs with the condition that they complete level five of the University of Miami Intensive English Program or obtain a 550 TOEFL or higher.

All applicants need to send a completed application, the application fee, a passport-sized photo, a copy of their passport identification page, and a bank or scholarship letter verifying that the student, family member, or sponsor has sufficient funds to cover the student’s expenses while studying at the IEP.
